So it was off to Pakenham this month with the format of the day being Matchplay, the pairings were set by the order of handicap in the club with the intention of having each match as evenly paired as possible, with the overall winner/loser of the day determined by the biggest winning margin.
This turned out to be the clubs man in form Big Alex who shot a 76 off the stick and touched up Gav by 6 holes with 5 to play, (this with a couple of barffs thrown in due to a bit of over-indulgence from the big fella), job done.

Other results on the day were:
Barra beat Stevie 3and 2
Damien beat Andy 3 and 1
Christophe beat Kev 4 and 2
Smarty drew Jimmy
Tich beat Tim 2 and 0
Mitch drew Rab
Clayton beat Koala 2 and 0
Alan beat Billy Mac 5 and 4
Joe beat Spoon 1 and 0
Hughie beat Joe 3 and 2
Deeks beat Snappy 3 and 2

Congratulations to all the days winners! Bragging rights.

Gav also failed to make the photo shoot …. again you’ll have to watch this space.

Note, that as previously mentioned Andy Mac was going for the 3 NAGAs in a row but successfully managed to avoid keeping the trophy even though he was 5 down with 5 to play, Damien’s wallet did appear a bit fatter than when he started the day it must be said.

With Gav’s failure to show it was an opportunity for Andy Mac to get acquainted with his long lost buddy

TWINS!!!

Next month we are off to Berwick Montuna, March 9th, tee-off at 7.45 am
Format being Stableford with Big Alex going for 3 jackets in a row

This month saw the lads congregate at the Rosebud Country Club with the format of the day to be the Callaway system.
Good to see everyone turning up on time, making things a lot easier on the day, nice to see Jimmy Dempsey back playing with us again, if only for a day, also mention to our new recruit off the bench, Welshy.
Under the Callaway system the lads had to keep a stroke score for the day which led to some rather large scorecards coming back to the clubhouse and with the course in suberb condition there could be no excuses other than ones own golfing prowess.
Once all the calculations had been done it seemed only fitting that the winner on day should be big Alex who shot 78 off the stick with a net 72, not bad for someone who couldn’t putt, apparently a joy to watch.

Sadly at the other end of the scale, under the days format, the collector of the NAGA fell to Andy Mac, and for the second month in a row did not show up for the photo shoot, watch this space…..

What was highlighted was the wide range of handicap we have in the club, with Alex shooting 78 at one end and Billy Mac shooting 128 at the other. Congratulations though to Billy who managed to keep the difference down to 50 thanks to his new driver, or he could have got a really bad score.

Nearest the Pins went to Snappy Tom, Welshy x2 and Hughie

Next outing is to Pakenham on 10th Feb and the format for that day will be a head to head matchplay starting with our 2 lowest handicappers and working our way down through the club

This month saw the club venturing onto the pastures of Devilbend after a lengthy lay-off due to the inclement weather at Flinders last month.
With a few no shows and a late arrival a quick shuffle of the teams had to be made.
The day’s format was a team event with a combination of all four stableford scores.
It was one of the re-shuffled groups who benefited from the non appearance of Robbie who picked up big Rab in the mornings draft and proceeded to don the jackets at presentation, with a total score of 132 points.

Mitch, Snappy Tom and Tich (missing Rab)

At the other end of the presentation scale it was mentioned that another of the teams didn’t benefit from the non appearance of Billy Mac and so picked up the NAGA, with a total of 99 points.

Deeks, Tim and Barra (missing Andy Mac) – still in the trees
Andy Mac was later met by a logging protest as he left the course due to the amount of trees he felled in 4 hours.
Special mention must be made of Jimmy and Hughie’s highest scores of the day, each with 39 points. Another exhibition that can’t go by without mention was big Tam’s front nine with a grand tally of 3 points.
A reminder to all members if they cannot make a game to contact the organisers as early as possible so they can try to find a replacement, it is especially frustrating for team events when people don’t turn up.
Also if we could make an effort to come back to the club if only for the presentations would be much appreciated.

Congratulations to Damien and Anna on the birth of their daughter recently.

Merry Christmas to all our members and their families and to the wonderful ladies in the kitchen who put on a fantastic Christmas dinner for us (even without the trifle).

This months outing to Flinders turned out to be not much more than that, just an outing, with torrential wind and rain from the time of arrival it was voted that the lads would not be venturing out onto said course.

There was also a touch of sadness attached to the day as one of our members, Jack Jones, lost his battle with illness and passed away on Friday, 26th October.
Early on Sunday morning the family took Jack’s ashes and scattered them on his favourite course, Flinders, up where the views are quite stunning.

Despite not being able to get out onto the course the MGC gathered to send Jack off, after some kind words from Andy Mac the club proposed a toast, then held a silence which flowed into a rousing round of applause and finished off with the sound of the bagpipes. If that wasn’t enough all the lads drove up to where Jack now is, lined up down the fairway, and like a 23 gun salute, each fired a golf ball into the ocean.
The family would like to express their utmost gratitude to the club for their wonderful send off, it is truly comforting to know he was so well thought of.
Quite an emotional day! I’m sure Jack will now be sitting with Gary Buick telling each other how good they were.

The second outing of the season saw the lads at Carrington Park, with grey skies and windy conditions it was good to see everyone making the effort and turning up on time.
News that the greens had been cored and sanded midweek seemed to have the effect of high scoring throughout the club, possibly due to the ball sticking on approach.
Due to the absence of Stevie Gray who fell ill overnight we sent out Alex, Tim and Baby Koala first as a group of 3. As it turned out the rest of the club may as well of stayed home as Baby Koala proceeded to rape the course and come home with an outrageous 45 stableford points, this being more than enough to don the Tweed for the first singles event of the season.
At the other end of the awards the dreaded NAGA was ‘won’ by one of last months champions Alan, quite a fall from grace to say the least.

The prizes were then given out to the ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ winners who were;
3rd hole – Mitch, 6th hole – Alex, 11th hole – Gav, 17th hole – Baby Koala
18th hole ‘longest drive’ – Damien

A special mention to Alan Anderson who continually donates these prizes, much appreciated.

Stableford results for the day;
Baby Koala – 45 points, Damien 43, Clayton 42, Winker 41, Gaz 40, Koala 39, Alex 39, Snappy 38, Bob 38, Andy Mac 38, Barra 37, Tich 36, Smarty 36, Tim 35, Deeks 34, Hughie 34, Billy Mac 33, Rab 33, Joe 32, Mitch 31,
Jimmy 31, Gav 29, Alan 23.

The 07/08 season got under way on Sunday, 3rd Sept. at the magnificent Moonah Links

With most of the crew gathered on time and a couple of members still in the land of nod having to receive an early/late phone call to stir them into action, the troops were into the golf carts and escorted to their relevant tees for a shotgun start, except for Andy Mac and Gaz who struggled with the concept of follow the leader and took an immediate right turn into the car park did a few laps, lost the rest of the group and had to be personally taken out by a different organiser. This had a roll on effect towards the rest of their team, Gav and Billy Mac, as at the end of play they took another wrong turn to exit the course and ended up bidding for property at a real estate auction in Rosebud, but 30 minutes after everyone else finished they made it back to the clubhouse safe and sound.

The format of 4 ball ambrose seemed to suit the rusty participants, with the constant view of the McClelland search party cutting a familiar look across the plains of the peninsula throughout the day, to say we deposited a few golf balls around the course would be a fair assessment.

With much spruiking around the traps in the weeks leading up to the first outing it would appear some people had given themselves a bit too much to live up to.

The team of Snappy Tom, Damien and Alan had to play with one man down but this did little to curtail their quest to wear the first Harris Tweed of the season and thus came home with the goods.

At the other end of the scale the NAGA (not a golfers ar@#*ole) trophy was presented to the team led by Deeks of Hughie, Clayton and Koala, it would appear a certain lack of team harmony may have contributed to this.

Team Photo
Alan, Snappy Tom & Damien
Hughie, Koala, Deeks & Clayton

Scores:

Team 2 - Snappy Tom, Damien, Alan (72) net 59.625

Team 6 - Gav, Andy, Gaz, Billy Mac (74) net 61.5

Team 3 - Tam, Mitch, Barra, Tich (74) net 62.25

Team 1- Joe, Smarty, Stevie, Tim (74) net 62.25

Team 5 - Rab, Jimmy, Winker, Baby Koala (76) net 63

Team 4 – Deeks, Hughie, Clayton, Koala (79) net 65.375

Nearest the Pins, only 2 of the 4 par threes were conquered with the winners being Damien and Hughie

All in all a good day was had by all and bring the next one at Carrington Park on 30th Sept.

Apologies to Gaz for failing to mention him as a new inductee to the starting line up this season.

The new golf season is almost upon us and another few months beckon on the lush fairways of the Peninsula for our cultured crew.

This season opens on Sunday 2nd September, at the daunting Moonah Links.

Could all our members please meet at 7.30 to allow us to get organised and we will take a team photo before tee-off at 8.00 a.m.

This year sees the elevation through the ranks of a couple of new captains to the fold, Joe and big ‘Sherbet Dab’ Rab and I’m sure their leadership qualities will shine through.
With the prestigious, and now famed, Harris Tweed jacket back up for grabs it’s all to play for. This year we have two new members promoted into the starting pool of 24, these being Damien Bradbury and Smarty, also new onto the subs bench we welcome back Jimmy Miller after a very long lay off due to injury, a big Harris Tweed welcome to all.

This season we have the good fortune of having Ann Lee and her wonderful helpers to serve us on our return each month from the course, this gesture from the ladies really caps the day of perfectly and it just wouldn’t be the same without them, a massive Harris Tweed thanks to them all.
